* Note: in 1999 the American Council on exercise implemented the idea of creating an elite certification status for currently certified personal trainers, which would emphasize kinesiology, rehabilitation and biomechanics. This was the Clinical Exercise Specialist certification. The first exam was held in May 1999 and was used as a gold standard to evaluate and create subsequent exams. Candidates who sat the May 1999 exam had no previous references available for studying (current examinees can now use old exams for practice and review): as a result this first group were like guinea pigs for the development and implementation of this new certification. This difficult initial exam was only available to write in the US so non-US candidates had to fly to the US to participate. Out of all the candidates, only 2 Canadians passed - and Laurie Smith was one of these.
